The very name QUAPAW takes one back to Little Rock’s early history when it is said members of Quapaw Indian tribes roamed and lived in the area. From that long ago period until today, the name QUAPAW has been attached to an entire area of the city (The Quapaw Quarter) and to a number of Little Rock facilities including a high-rise building constructed in 1967 on Little Rock’s east side of 700 East 9th Street. The building was named QUAPAW TOWER.
Built as an upscale apartment building, it served as home away from home to many Arkansas Legislators. They, and numerous other Legislators who did not live there, found the TOWER’S main attraction – the famous (infamous?) Flaming Arrow, a private Club and Restaurant – to be favorite gathering place after hours.
In 1980, the building was converted to condominiums, becoming one of the early condo complexes in the city. Today, the stately 13- story building, containing 144 residential units and eight commercial first floor units, is considered by its residents to be “the uptown place to live in downtown Little Rock.”
Across the street from Little Rock’s first park, MacArthur Park, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation, QUAPAW TOWER finds itself conveniently situated almost midway between Little Rock’s continuing east-of-Main growth and the quickly-changing look of the South Main area.
Little Rock’s Airport is only a short drive. Those residing on the east side of the building have the airport, Heifer International headquarters, and the Clinton Presidential Center as part of their view, while west side resident enjoy the ever-growing skyline of downtown Little Rock from their balconies.
Individual units, ranging in décor from ultra modern to eclectic to traditional, reflect the personalities of QUAPAW TOWER’S diverse population, and resident enjoy a number of appealing amenities. A beautiful, fenced landscaped swimming pool – with plush furnishings and a large gazebo with ceiling fans for the “sun shy” crowd – provides an oasis in the city for residents of all ages for more than six months of the year and is the perfect place for parties for residents, planned by an active Hospitality Committee. An exercise room with state-of-the-art equipment is available.
A gated property, QUAPAW TOWER is surrounded by an attractive iron fence. In recent years, a handsome sign containing the name and address (700) of the facility has been added to the 9th Street side of the property, and considerable landscaping has been added to the west and south sides. A comfortable and inviting Hospitality Room, just off the well-appointed and welcoming Entry Lobby, is used for resident gatherings and private parties; coffee is served there six mornings a week and most afternoons with coffee and treats provided by resident donations.
QUAPAW TOWER holds a Holiday Open House biennially in early December. A number of residents open their decorated homes for tours, and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales goes to a local charitable organization.
